Earn experiences

April 6, 2017
buy experiences not things

Buy experiences not things. Spending on experiences makes people happier than spending on things. Things get broken and go out of style. Experiences get better every time you talk about them.

One would ask-

What do you do with your life if you are not spending time shopping, watching TV, scrolling through social media or maintaining the stuff you own?

The answer is simple- The things you always wanted to do but blamed the time.

The day I moved away from Home to Hostel, my TV watching habit was broken and I am thankful for it today. It saves me from mindless watching and being a couch potato.

I spend very little time shopping, and mostly for the necessities. Rather, I stopped going for window shopping. Now I read more, I write more, I play with my Kid, I dance with him. Moreover, I have time for my passion for Crafts.

In other words, my time is spent doing the things I value most.

It was in 2012 when I quit my MNC Job in a Metro city to come back and settle in my Hometown. It was a decision taken by Heart as I did not want to spend 1/2 of my Salary to go into rent, commute for more than 2 hours a day and come back home worn out and dizzy.

Though I talked about it many times and regret sometimes in the past but now I mark it as one of the best decisions of my Life.

Buy Experiences not things for the ones you Love

Gift people not the stuff but the happy experiences- Be it a movie ticket or Spa voucher, Concert or play tickets, monthly membership of guitar class or swimming class.

I will also try to be open asking others for the same because experiences are what we always document and not the things.

You might not remember anything about going shopping with friends But I bet you remember an outing to a beach and the fun you had.

You might not remember the new gadget you bought but you remember the day you danced in Rain.

You might not remember the dress you worn for a party but you remember the day you went for long drive with loved ones.

Possessions make our lives easier and better, I agree but to a limit. No matter how much you have, there is always something new and better that you wish for.

Ask anyone ” What did you do over the weekend?”. You would be more happy to hear about their experiences rather than their shopping list.

When you spend money on experiences, you never regret your spending. The joy of purchasing things vanish quickly but the joy and memories of experiences stay for a Lifetime.

This is my favorite post by far on your theme, Upasna. I so loved it. Especially the sentences you’ve put in quotes! How I love to experience some things than get a flower vase or tumblers for birthdays 😛

Very well written. If I spend more than 30 min in front of TV just browsing channels if there is nothing worth to watch, that guilty feeling of wasting time sets in. Experiences, I can speak about them even 10-15 years old as if it was yesterday. As we start growing old this realization makes more sense. Thanks for the write up.

I totally agree. It’s the experience that counts… All the happy and beautiful things are natural… In simple things… Doing simple stuffs with friends and family. The gadgets and jewellery are just momentary pleasures.

Hostel and living away from home teaches us a lot of things. Yes experience is your asset that gives you benifits later in life

This is very very true! In my 20s, I tennis after things. Initially it was very heady, but soon, things brought me no happiness. Then I shifted to buying experiences, and the joy there is lasting!
