Less Fortunate

February 18, 2016

Less fortunate- A phrase with varying definitions as it can only be measured relatively. When we compare ourselves with the ones more privileged, we would always feel less fortunate. In this Digital age, we tend to forget about the things we are blessed with.

It was my Husband’s Birthday and like every year, we have chosen to donate fruits to the less fortunate Kids sitting outside the temple.

The moment we step outside, they gathered around us asking for Prasad (Sacramant)

One of them informed us smartly “By the time you will come with it, I will make them sit in a line”. I smiled at his act and acknowledged his leadership qualities by nodding.

Wonder! In less than 2 minutes, they all were settled.

One of them asked childishly if I brought Samosas(Fried Pastry)- I wished I would.

I was concerned with their Health but forgot that they are Kids and moreover, they don’t get these mouth-watering Munches as easily as we could.

I asked them – “How many of you go to School and How many know that there is a Government School nearby”.

Out of 16 children, there were only 2 boys who raised their hands- It always make me Sad knowing that a Kid is not going to School. Its like de-voiding them of their childhood.

The moment I asked them to go to School, all were quiet and blank. Cheer disappeared in the air.

Their expression was reflecting the helplessness as if they want to but back-pulled by their condition or family. A girl, eldest of all, asked me about the school location and if I teach there, showing her willingness.

I left with 2 Promises: One to them to bring Samosas next time and other to myself, to get at least 1 Kid enrolled.

Wish me Luck to serve these less fortunate kids.
