Plan effectively to achieve the goals [Guest Post]

As we roll into the new year and big good bye to the year which has been – many of us are in the mode of looking back to review and looking forward to plan and design our lives ahead!

Most of us, love to sit down with a nice (& new) notebook, and pen down our goals, hopes and dreams and wishes for the year. The easiest way to achieve our goals is to plan for them.

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” – Benjamin Franklin

Here are my top tips and ideas for effective Planning & achieving my goals –

  • Make a GOAL sheet

I love making lists, they help in getting all my Goals in one place and not left as wandering ideas in my mind!

  • Evaluate each of your Goal on the parameters of 3Ps –

Does THIS goal make you feel Purposeful?

Are you Passionate about achieving this goal?

Does thinking about this goal make you feel peaceful?

(I realise this is a slightly odd question, but I ask you, if you have are working on something for someone else, and doesn’t bring peace to you, if it doesn’t make you feel good – then why are you investing your time and effort into it?)

  • Make your Goal SMART –

You may have heard this often, but I promise you, doing this exercise on each of your Goals and really writing down the answers goes a long way in ensuring that the goal is achieved!

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable & Actionable

R – Realistic

T – Time bound

  • Learn how your energy flows and Create a schedule accordingly
Create (I prefer to write it down, and then replicate it on to a digital calendar) a practical schedule, for each month, and then break it down into each week. As you go ahead, further plan each day too! BE PRACTICAL!Take into account how your own energy flows. Are you a morning person or night owl? Do you like to work in quiet areas or like ambient sounds? Do you like working in long stretches or shorter portions of time?
and, how much time are you productive (truly) and how much time is unaccounted for?!If you are like me, you may underestimate the time a task takes, and completely forget to schedule in the break times. Or, ignore the fact, that while doing a task, you may get way laid into a day dream ?
  • Plan for the BREAKS – every day you must, must give time to doing nothing! To taking a break. To just being!
  • Break up each goal into actions – and then schedule those actions into your schedule. Plan how you shall go about each of the task – Take into account the time and resources required. And, DO ASK FOR HELP when you really need it! (Both at home and at work).
  • Regular Reviews & Modification

Do remember to do regular reviews and modify your plan as required to help you achieve your goal. Remember, real life happens, and a lot of unexpected things happen which take us away from our original plan. It’s OKAY! Just modify the plan and get back on track!

Which are your favourite ways to plan? Let me know if you try out any of my tips and how you find them.

I wish you all a very happy new year filled with joy and achievements!

Ishieta, you are very motivating and like you, I also prefer pen, paper, and diart than the digital ones, the part about the time to be productive speaks to me as well as breaking goals into actions plus breaks make so much sense.

Bang on Isheita goal setting is important and your tips are spot on. One more thing I would like to add is look at the goals you set last year, how much did you achieve, were they worth it, do you want consider them this year or drop out a few, what are the lessons you learned?

Thanks Akshata! Absolutely agree – it is so important to review and learn & tweak!

I really like the idea of the three P’s that you have shared. Purpose passion and peace.
    Nice tips girl.
