When we start something new, we tend to make mistakes. Mistakes help us learn and grow.
I started podcasting first in July, 2019 (on Soundcloud) but after recording 3 episodes, the enthusiasm got lost somewhere and I quit.
I restarted it afresh in May 2020 (during the lockdown) and this time I kept going.
I, too, made some podcasting mistakes but before talking about those let me share about the things I did right.
Podcast Name
I chose “Comeback Minimalist” as the name of my Blog in 2017 and setup the social media accounts. So, it was easy for me to choose a name for my podcast as theme is Minimalism only. You must be feeling as if everything was planned but trust me, I never thought of having a podcast before 2019.
I have written about “Why you should decide a name of your podcast wisely and timely” in my post – Things to know before you start your podcast.
Graphics and Creative Art
Again, I already had it designed for my Blog using Canva and used the same. However, you should decide these things beforehand and take copyright rules into account.
Format of podcast
I started with solo recordings as I know it would be difficult for me to record with someone else. Being a Parent to 2 small Kids, I have to use early mornings or late nights to record and no one would be available at that time to record with me.
Though now I am planning to do some interviews with like-minded people.
Consistency
I feel proud when I say I consistently published 1 episode each week from last 4 months. This helped me gain good traffic and confidence.
Talking about what I love
When you ask any veteran podcaster about the single advice, they will say-
“Choose your niche according to your taste, what you love and you will never have to think what to talk about”
This is why I chose Minimalism as I love everything about simple and intentional living, sustainable lifestyle and living with less.
Now, coming to the podcasting mistakes I made.
I did not announced my launch
The decision was so spontaneous that I did not planned anything about the podcast launch.
Experts say that you must have a plan for the launch. However, it went fine for us as it is a solo podcast and my graphics and name were ready, social media accounts were in place and I was already a self-proclaimed Minimalist with my Ebook “A-Z of Minimalism” which was published 3 years back.
I did not have a self-hosted Blog in place
I do not have a self-hosted blog on same name. However I do have a blog with Blogger. Promoting through Blog is easy as you already have contact information of the people interested in your niche.
I did not use Sound editing software in the beginning
I started with the microphones that comes with mobile phone but then I bought a condenser Mic with filter and used Audacity for editing the sound.
