SELF IMPROVEMENT

10 things that hold us back from living our dreams and be successful

Sharing is caring!

I am not perfect but yes, I had been there. Now, I know what are the things that were holding me back.

A problem identified is half-solved. Right?

β€œWe cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.” ~ Sheryl Sandberg

We all have dreams and we all use this phrase once in our lives “I wish I could“.

But there are many things that stop us from reaching our goals. They divert us from identifying and believing in our potential, which is enormous.

Pin and share-

Things that hold us back

Wrong choices

Taking up the Job just for the sake of good money, Quitting the Job just to get a tag Entrepreneur, Choosing a career path just because it is a shortcut etc.

Our wrong choices put us into an oblivion.

Weigh the pros and cons before choosing. Foresee the long-term effects rather than looking at short-term benefits.

Griping

Complaining is the worst thing we can do to ourselves.

Rather than always grumbling about what we don’t have, start cherishing and valuing what we have.

Stop comparing your blessing with others. You will never have enough that way.

Lack of belief in our own dreams

First, start believing in our own dreams before expecting others to take you seriously.

Do not doubt your own ideas before you try and test them.

We stop learning

Read more. Listen more. Learn more.

This is what I have always heard from my Mother. Books, Blogs, Vlogs, Podcasts – Choose whatever source you wish to but never let your learning curve stagnate.

Learn something new each day which helps you move closer to your goals, which stacks up to your knowledge rather than diverting you.

We talk less about it

Talk about your dream, each day. Write about it. Share it with others.

Discussing our dreams with others reinforces our determination towards them.

Lack of planning

No goal can be met without proper planning.

Pen down your short-term and long-term goals. Make the strategy and time-bound your goals.

No priorities set

There are so many things on our plate and we cannot tick all of them in the single day.

Setting the priority is a must to avoid overburdening ourselves and shifting our focus in the right direction.

Taking up higher priority things earlier in the day is something we should try to follow.

Fear of Alone

We should not seek someone to help us take the plunge because it’s OUR dream.

No one other than us would be more passionate about it.

Whether it’s about going to the gym, joining a new course or launching something- you need to do it alone.

Take the advice or support, people can offer based on their experiences but do not depend on others for the success of your dream.

Surrounding yourself with uninspired people

Surround yourself with people who inspire you, who helps you look at your hidden potential.

It is only possible when they are themselves inspired and goal oriented.

Win over Distractions

In this Era when you always feel drowned in over-information and social media feeds, it’s easy to get distracted.

You turn on to the internet for something but you end up finding something else.

Controversial conversations, overwhelming pictures, and viral stuff distracts us and we end up wasting our limited time scrolling through these endlessly.

Procrastination

Last but not the least, Start today than never.

It is summarized in my favorite Quote “Day 1 or One day- you decide”

We tend to postpone the things for later. This becomes our habit unless we intentionally break this.

Wow these are all so true! The one I agree with the most is complaining. When we stop complaining and start cherishing what we already have, life gets a lot easier. This is something that I have started to consciously follow since the past few years.

Procrastination is the biggest problem holding us back. The biggest issue that was holding me back and even today sometimes it does. Very well written.

“Take the advice or support, people can offer based on their experiences but do not depend on others for the success of your dream.”
I am going to make this my mantra, too often we depend upon other people, but ultimately the goals and the responsibility to achieve them is on us!
Thank you for writing this post!

Such brilliant points Upasna. Choices are something I have been teaching myself lately. How to make better ones and ones that matter to me.

Nice post Upsana. Thanks for sharing these tips of self-improvement. These are actually very basic things that one needs to follow to pursue their dreams.

Probably procrastination is the big one. I think maybe fear of failure can find a place in this list. These two can kill almost any dreams pretty quickly. (Maybe slowly in the case of procrastination πŸ˜‰ )

This is one post that everyone can relate too. I can relate to most of the things mentioned. Especially liked the last part – Day one or One day!

Lack of self belief is the important thing and yes I believe talking about a dream to closed lines matters a lot.

  • Reply Aurora M October 7, 2020 at 11:02 pm

All points are absolutely correct ! I could feel the depth of each words. Sometimes better to ignore few things n move on

  • Reply Ritu Bindra October 7, 2020 at 10:27 pm

It is primarily the fear of losing that holds us back. We are comfortable in the constant. It is better to have tried and failed than not have tried at all. Great post.

Such a great post and one that I was checking for myself as I read along. I procrastinate a lot and I need to stop that immediately. Where choices are concerned, sometimes they just seem right when you take them, realising later that things didn’t pan out the way they should. However, the lessons must always be learnt so we make them fewer with time.

These are absolutely true, we do hold ourselves back from experiencing the best of life.

  • Reply PraGun October 7, 2020 at 6:40 pm

So true, once I started reading I realized all are so valid things we keep on thinking and stop ourselves from moving ahead. Procrastination – as soon as I read this word these days its a reminder yes its pending and I have to finish my To-Do list.
We stop learning, planning, fear and we just don’t do it with excuses in hand. Great post.

For a moment I felt you missed procrastination. I believe this is the most important thing that keeps us holding back. The rot of over thinking and then thinking about what others will think. At the end what should matter is what we feel. Great listing of factors. Keep the good work going.

I agree, uncertainties and fear of unknown hold us back from dreaming a big. There are times when we don’t have goals in life, do not know where to head can also limit us to great extent. Great Post.

I am guilty of doing all this to myself. Little wonder that I feel so stagnant . So needed to read this, Upasana.

I’m guilty of procrastination and the fear of being alone. Self-motivation is crucial to achieve our dreams.

    • Reply Upasna February 19, 2018 at 1:13 pm

Fear of alone is too common among all of us. I remember the time when I refused to join a coaching class just because my friend wasn’t joining with me. But then my Mother made me understand this and after that, I did not wait for someone else to join my dreams. Yes Varsha, Self-motivation is something we all need. Affirmations are good. Thanks for reading.

This is such a great post! and frankly, sometimes we need to read something like this for a push! even if its a virtual one! l

    • Reply Upasna February 19, 2018 at 2:25 pm

Thanks, Ishieta… I know we all need timely pushes.

  • Reply Akshata February 13, 2018 at 12:43 pm

These are true Upasna and achieving a dream does need a lot of dedication, hard work, self motivation and positivity. But I sometimes wonder – what about things beyond our control? There always will be something of taht sort- like a promotion which is not entirely in our hands or becoming an entrepreneur which means you need clients- while we can work towards our goals an pursue them relentlessly , its difficult to accept the set backs which are caused by things beyond our control and then re work on those with the same vigor

    • Reply Upasna February 19, 2018 at 2:27 pm

I understand what you are trying to say Akshata. Let’s take an example of my App campaign- Gratitude Pie. I did gather the pre-requisites and worked with my full effort but even then there were many shortcomings or mistakes I did. I made a list of them and I will work on them now. There will always be something which we cannot control. We are human. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I need a kick in the bum and this post does that with wrong choices and fear that hold us back. My lack of planning is something I gotta work on, too.

    • Reply Upasna February 19, 2018 at 2:29 pm

Ha ha…Vishal I hope it shakes you up and fills you with fresh vigor. Good wishes.
